SOUND LIBRARY

The sound recordings in the program library are accessed through this element.

Purpose

Side by side sound comparisons are one of the most effective ways of demonstrating the consequences of alternate proposals. This is also an effective way to compare the noise produced by different types of aircraft.

How to Use the Sound Library

The initial display contains three windows. The desired window can be brought forward as the top layer by clicking on it. They can also be minimized by clicking the box with the arrow icon in the right corner of each window. For the two that display aircraft graphics, a pop-up list is located in the frame displaying the aircraft name. The pop-up list is used to access the available selection of recordings. Clicking the box with the speaker icon plays and/or stops sounds and animations.

The graphic display associated with various sounds can differ. Some are static displays, and some are 3D animations. When a static display is accessed a control bar appears at the bottom of the graphic and play is started. The screen format changes where 3D animation is available.

Most of the aircraft recordings are associated with full screen animations. When one of these is selected a full screen animation box will appear, covering most of the screen. The animation will begin playing once it is loaded. There is a set of controls across the bottom of the screen. Working from left to right, the airplane identifier box can display the same sort of selection list associated with the initial sound library screen. However, it only shows entries that are associated with 3D animations. The next boxes are for selecting various combinations of operations (arrival/departure), runway, and development scenarios. Boxes only appear if they are appropriate. Up to three may be displayed, but in the basic non-customized systems, the only selection will be plane type and operation. The "Stop" and "Sound" boxes control the animation and the sound. The "Return to Program" in the lower right corner reverts the display to its regular size.

There are three different background images associated with the Sound Library in the program. Fixed wing planes (and helicopters) arrive and depart from a depiction of an airfield. Animations take time to load and it is good practice to wait until one animation is completely loaded before swapping options.

The box labeled "Control Panel" will add a frame around the viewing area that contains multiple controls. These are used to maneuver within the image area and the functions of each control are labeled.

Learning the functions of these 3D controls requires experimentation. One useful control is "Go To". When this is selected the cursor is transferred into a sight icon that can be used to target the displayed aircraft. A click will zoom to the aircraft. Selecting the "Study" control and then clicking and dragging within the viewing area rotates the viewer around the selected aircraft. Clicking "Restore" will bring you back to an airstrip display.

The "Return to Program" area at the lower right restores the original Sound Library display.

The rearmost window on the library display shows a DNL spreadsheet. The day and night entries in this can be edited. Click on a cell to edit it. The resulting DNL is calculated whenever a new line is selected. The tabs at the top of the display are used to display alternate fleet mix scenarios.
