As aircraft speed exceeds the speed a sound a shock wave is formed. This element uses animations to display this effect. The screen appears with the animation underway. Mach speed (relationship to the speed of sound) is changed by clicking on the plus or minus arrows that appear at either end of the bar under the picture. Alternately, moving the slider will change the speed. An animation appropriate to the slider
position appears in the display frame. Related numeric and graphical
data are displayed below the bar. |
Sonic Boom PropagationDifferent maneuvers change the ways that the boom shockwave meets the terrain. The element shows how turns, climbs and dives, and changes of speed can alter the boom effect. The frames display animations for each
of the maneuvers listed from top to bottom at the right side of the
screen. One shows an animation of the aircraft, another shows the plan
view with the boom footprints, and the last shows the plane and the
footprints in a perspective view. Any of the illustrations can be put
into the larger frame by clicking on it. The controls under the frame
can be used to pause, stop, or manually advance the display. |
