NOISE MITIGATION

MULTIPLE FLIGHTS

Purpose

To illustrate flyby noise levels at selected distances.

How to use Multiple Flights

The selection boxes below the display allow selection of flybys at different distances as well as background sounds. Click on the title bar above the decibel display for a popup list of distance selections. The sound and related animation will start with as click on the Sound button to the side of the decibel display. You can play multiple sounds and animations at the same time. Each will start when its Sound button its clicked. The text display on the graphic ("1 mile from aircraft" in the screen capture) applies to the most recent sound event that is started. Note that if two sounds of equal volume occur at the same time the combined noise level is 3 dB louder than a single source.

The up down arrow keys can be used to adjust the volume of each sound.

You can also select a sound level as it might be heard indoors. Use the Listener Int/Ext button at the lower left to display a window frame over the graphic. When this appears, sounds are diminished by 20 decibels. This is typical for normal residential construction. The frequency spectrum of the sound is shifted to represent how structures filter exterior sounds. High frequency tones are blocked more than ones of low frequency.
