COMBINING EVENTS

ACOUSTIC SUMMATION

Purpose

This illustrates how individual noise events are summed over 24-hour periods. It also illustrates how noise contours should be interpreted.

Clicking on the speaker buttons can play the five events graphically depicted on the right individually or simultaneously. . The numbers of day and night events can be edited on the screen using the up and down arrows. The distance can be changed in the same fashion. The resulting SEL sum for any noise source is recalculated and displayed with every change. The DNL is recalculated as well. The "Calculate" button, when clicked, triggers an animation of the sound energy histograms being squeezed into the measurement beaker.

The "3-D View" button located just below the faucet produces an overlay showing an aerial view of an airport. Clicking on the map area at the center of the runways triggers an animation that shows the 24-hour noise accumulation as if it were a mountain, rising from the map surface. Clicking on the arrow buttons that appear on either side of the "View" control at the bottom center of the control frame will shift the viewpoint.
